The Ogun State office of the Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, has said that eligible voters who could not register during
the year 2011 voters’ registration exercise will have the opportunity to do so
by August.
The
state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Sam Olumekun, who disclosed over
the weekend in Abeokuta, the state capital, also said the commission would
begin the distribution of permanent voters’ card to those who had previously
been registered by August 22.
Olumekun explained that Ogun falls under the third phase of
the commission’s plan which will commence distribution of permanent voters’
cards between August 22 and 24.
He emphasised that the exercise would take place between the
hours of 8,00a.m and 4.00pm on the three days at the various polling units
across the state where voters had registered.
“Subsequently, it will be followed by continuous voters’
registration from August 28 to August 31, and this will take place at the
registration area centre for each ward from 8.00am to 4.00pm,” he said.
Against the backdrop of variation in the ages of those who
might have attained the voting age, the commissioner emphasised that the
exercise was meant for those who would have attained the age of 18 years since
the last registration exercise.
Olumekun also noted that the exercise would afford those who
did not register in the last exercise, as well as those who missed biometric
checks, the opportunity to exercise their civic responsibilities, by being
registered.
He stated that the commission was embarking on the exercise
as part of strategies to achieve a successful conduct of the 2015 polls.
The commissioner warned that the exercise was not meant for
those who had previously been registered.
The commission warned that anyone caught in the offence of
double registration would have his or her name deleted from the registration
list
