You’ll either want this woman’s awesome hair, or her house.
It’s a tough call, but your inner child won’t be able to help wanting to high five this lady with the multi-coloured hair, who has turned her house into a museum for her favourite childhood toy, Rainbow Brite.
Move over Care Bears and My Little Pony. Back in the 80s, a little girl called Wisp brought colour to the world as Rainbow Brite.
Along with her Colour Belt, magnificent horse Starlite and friends Twink and the Colour Kids, she spawned an extensive toy line, books, cartoon series, movie and even her own cereal. Little girls like Katy Cartee Haile were hooked.
Receiving her first Rainbow Brite doll for her fifth birthday, Katy, a dog walker from Apex in North Carolina, once dressed up as the champion of colour herself for Halloween in a homemade costume.
As time moved on, so did Katy, but her passion for Rainbow was reignited aged 15 by a random charity shop find. Her fledgling collection later prompted her to create rainbowbrite.net and with it, a community of like-minded individuals from around the world.
Over the years, Katy, now 34, has collected over 1,500 items and created what she proudly calls her Rainbow Brite Museum.
Up a rainbow painted staircase and set against walls decorated to resemble clear blue skies, you’ll find 500 square foot of glass cabinets and shelves containing rare and long since discontinued toys, collectables and paraphernalia.
Through a rainbow curtain there’s even a window with Rainbow Brite drapes above a bed with a matching duvet set.
Speaking exclusively to Metro, Katy says her husband Adam and family are generally supportive of her passion. ‘I’m sure some of my friends and relatives think it’s a little odd, but no one has ever said a negative word to me about it.’
‘My mother has bought many Rainbow Brite items for me and my husband has done amazing work bringing my dream of a Rainbow Land Museum to life. His typical response when asked what he thinks of my collection is, “I love my wife.” Ha ha!’
While no fans have made the trek to visit yet, Katy says ‘all are welcome!’
