The rain that started around 11 pm wreaked havoc in most parts of the city. Offa garage was affected the most.
Two brothers, identified Gafar, 5, and Basit, 3, have drowned when a rented three-storey building, located in Omosebi Hospital area off Ajasse Ipo road in Ilorin, was submerged by flood-water. The kids lived there their grandmother.
An occupant of a damaged building, Mr Nicholas Kooms, said the children were overpowered by the heavy flood. The brothers were promptly delivered to a nearby Ola-Olu Hospital. Unfortunately, both of them were confirmed dead upon arrival. Residents called for governmental assistance, declared that the root of the flood is blockage of drainages around the area, which prevented free flow of water to the nearby bridge opposite a popular hotel.
Fences of most of the buildings around the area including that of a hotel collapsed. Big trees were uprooted and blocked the ever-busy Ajasse-Ipo road, making vehicular movement in the area almost impossible. A part of the bridge collapsed, while many private and commercial vehicles were carried away to some destinations. Most of them were badly damaged as they somersaulted in the process. An Abuja-bound bus driver has also died in the flood. The deceased decided to sleep in his vehicle, and was washed away together with the bus.
