Nigerian Finishes 2014 Common Wealth Games With A Bang With 3 More Medals In Athletics

   The athletics event at the on going common wealth games ended tonight with a bang with the Jamaicans-led by the the king and Queen of the track Usain Bolt and Shirley Ann Fraser-Pryce-sweeping the gold in the relays, and Nigeria getting silver in the female relays.

            The first medal awarded to the Nigeria this evening was in the women's 4x400.
The quartet of Patience George, Regina George, Ada Benjamin, and Folashade Abugan won silver in the women’s 4 x 400 relay final at the ongoing 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
In a very close race, Team Nigeria finished on 3.24.71 behind Jamaica who won gold with a time of 3.23.82.
England came third after finishing in 3.27.24.

Also the dreams of Nigeria's golden girl Blessing Okagbare emulating Bahamas Debbie Ferguson by getting a gold treble at the on going common wealth games ended a little disappointingly after the Nigerian 4x100 female relay team finished with a silver medal.
Blessing did her best, but relays are more about team work and joint effort.
The Nigerian 4×100 relay team led by Blessing Okagbare also comprised of  comprising Gloria Asumnu, Dominique Duncan(formerly of the USA), and Lawreta Ozoh.
Nigeria finished with a time of 42.92 behind Jamaica who won gold with a time of 41.83, setting a new games record at the Hampden Park Stadium in Glasgow.
England came in third with a time of 43.10.
Considering that Jamaica has a female sprint relay team consisting of some of the worlds best including Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shirley Ann Fraser-Pryce the current Olympic and world champion, the Jamaican win came as no surprise.

Similarly, Tosin Oke the defending Common wealth champion in the men's triple jump also finished with a silver with a leap of 16.84m.

He was edged out of the gold medal by South Africa's Khotoso Mokoena jumped a leap of 17.20. In third place was India's Arpinder Singh with a jump of 16.63m.

With this feat, Nigeria ends the  XX Commonwealth games with 36 medals 11gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze, maintaining the 8th place on the medals’ table.

This is by far the nations best outing at a sporting event in more than 10 years and I am very proud of Team Nigeria.
