A young man left with horrific head images after a savage hammer attack has taken his first steps unaided.

Ben Maycock has taken his first steps unaided, four years after being left with a huge dent in his head.

Mr Maycock, now 21, was just minutes from death after spending three weeks in a coma following the attack.

His grief-stricken family were told to prepare for the worst but doctors at Queens Medical Centre, Nottinghamshire, managed to save his life by cutting away his skull to relieve swelling.

Mr Maycock, from Leicester, has now begun walking for the first time after being confined to a wheelchair when he left hospital.

Two men were jailed over the ‘merciless’ hammer attack in 2010.
